Another album feature

While I contemplate what kinds of things to fill this space with, here is another that has struck me recently as pretty awesome. I swear that not all the bands I listen to have female lead singers who aren’t American. Then again, I was going to add a feature on Duchess Says, but maybe I’ll leave that for another post…

Album: Fortress Round My Heart

Artist: Ida Maria

Genre: Punk/Alt Rock (?)

Similar artists maybe: The Ting Tings except not really at all

I heard “I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked” on CD 101 while back home recently, and I had to hear more from this artist. Apparently, Ida Maria is a Norwegian rocker who, um, has synesthesia? That’s pretty cool.

What do I love about her music? It’s so energetic and catchy, it makes me want to dance about – which is saying a lot coming from me, a perpetual wallflower. She has the pop-punk beat down in a good way, and she embellishes the sound with a wonderful voice that makes her songs stand out from the typical washed-out garbage of the genre (no offense to any fans).

Speaking of her voice… She throws it about like it’s your business to hear and accept it. Even listening to the studio album, I can’t help but imagine her standing up on a quaint little bar stage, throwing her arms about and dashing the microphone stand against the wood, hurling her words and a bit of sweat at the audience. The little soliloquizing bits, like her cutting in, “What the hell do I do this for?!” in “I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked” as if she is addressing the person in question really adds a personal touch of emotion to her words that catches me.

If you’re into upbeat bar dance/punk tunes and gritty songstresses, check Ida Maria out. Just try not to put a dent in the floor with your toe-tapping.

A video, for demonstration’s sake:

Some time soon, I’m going to shift this over to a website with a unique domain, assuming I can figure it out. Just a heads up.
