‘Spiral’ by Hiromi – because jazz is cool
Album: Spiral
Artist: Hiromi
Genre: contemporary jazz, jazz fusion
Gateway Track: “Love and Laughter”
Lately, I’ve been on a jazz kick. Actually, I’ve always been a lover of jazz, as evidenced by such hobbies as swing dancing and playing the saxophone. To say that I am an avid connoisseur of the genre, however, would be a stretch of the truth.
In reality, I am not very knowledgeable about the evolution of jazz over the years. That said, I can say that jazz pianist Hiromi Uehara‘s 2006 album Spiral is worth a listen by anyone interested in the music style. Accompanied by bassist Tony Grey and drummer Martin Valihora, Hiromi presents a mostly light-hearted collection of jazz tunes, integrating rock and electronica elements where appropriate.
Hiromi’s piano playing is smart and emotive. It is clear she really enjoys what she is doing. From the start of such tunes as “Deja Vu” and “Love and Laughter”, her fingers dance expertly along the keys through complex melodies. Meanwhile, the drums and bass fall in time perfectly with her spirited style, creating a firm foundation and at times playing a bit in their own solos.
The music played by the trio does not stick to one specific type. Hiromi also plays keyboard for a few songs – most notably in “Return of the Kung-Fu World Champion”, which has a sort of cyber-rock beat to it. The ensemble, bass and drums included, are reminiscent of rock groups like Rush with its dead-on percussion and full-bodied sound.
I could use words to further describe the sort of sound that can be found on Spiral, but I do not think I am qualified for the task. Instead, I will share with you a YouTube video of the group performing my favorite song on the album, “Love and Laughter”. The performance, taken from a DVD of Hiromi on tour, is cut a bit short toward the end on account of time limitations. Whatever the case, the group’s joy is clearly visible.
